Luke Cage is a former street tough and convicted criminal who gained steel-hard skin and superhuman strength from an experimental procedure while in prison. He became the first Black superhero to headline his own Marvel Comics series in 1972. A self-made hero who charges for his services — earning the title Hero for Hire — Luke Cage eventually became a founding member and leader of the New Avengers and a central figure in street-level Marvel storytelling.
