Captain America's original ongoing series ran from 1968 and is essential reading for the character's history. Jack Kirby returned to the character in the mid-1970s for a celebrated run (#193–214). The title later produced the landmark Steve Englehart run and Roger Stern's acclaimed issues. The series documents Cap's evolution from Avenger to symbol of American idealism through the turbulent 1970s and beyond.
